I’ve been dreaming of this space for them for many months and it’s finally come to life. To see it now from what it was, it’s better than what I had imagined it to be. Here are some fun before photos.
Our plans for this shared room changed many times before and during reno. At first we wanted to expand the room and make it bigger. This would have involved adding on a large dormer opening out to our backyard. The plans were amazing and beautiful but unfortunately the price wasn’t. If this was indeed our forever home we would have went for it but since we’re thinking and planning on only a couple more years in our home we crossed this luxury option off the list and back to the drawing board we went.
We knew before moving the girls upstairs that we needed to address two things: removing one of the skylight windows and replacing the flooring. Yes some natural light had to go and same with the barn wood floor. I shared my reasons why in this post. We replaced the flooring with beautiful white oak planks. I love how fresh and clean and open it has made the room feel.
Our original plan for the skylight was to not only take it out but to open the ceiling to create a larger vaulted point. But due to how our roof is this wasn’t possible unless we literally took the roof off and restructured everything. So of course, we vetoed that idea and instead just worked with what we had. The remaining options being: 1.) to keep the opening that the window was in or 2.) fill in the space and make it flush with the rest of the ceiling. Those that follow us close on instagram stories may recall me sharing this part of our reno and taking it to the polls. So many of you voted as well as had other inspiring ideas. Turns out we agreed with many of you to keep the opening and we’re so happy that we did. Not only did it save us money but it makes the room feel bigger too.
The bedroom isn’t very big or deep. Because of this I knew we had to be smart about their beds to really maximize the space to move about the room with ease. So that meant saying goodbye to their beautiful vintage Jenny Lind beds and replacing them with new. I designed their beds with no headboard and footboard in mind to conserve space. And because of that I wanted the wall behind their bed to have something to tie everything together. Something to make sitting up in bed feel more cozy instead of the bare wall. Shiplap was my answer for that and I love how it turned out. As for the shiplap on the ceiling where the skylight used to be, that was an after thought but totally makes it all work.
As for the bed details, I designed the beds and my step-dad made them. They turned out amazing I think. And the best part, the girls love them and they were significantly less than the beds I had been eyeing. The legs were hand turned in his garage. It was such a fun process to watch and be a part of and it makes the room that much more special.
Their linen bedding is from Magic Linen. The sweet pompom detail on the edges had me at hello and couldn’t be passed up. I think it adds just the right amount of whimsy and charm to their beds. The beautiful golden throw blankets are from Louise Misha. The golden velvet and peach accents really pop making their space cheerful and fun!
Some of you may remember this post of my shared office space and this one too that shows how it was just before we changed things up again. It’s now Kaia’s space for all her things. Even though this bedroom is shared with three girls, this side of the room feels somewhat separate which has been nice for Kaia. It gives her just the right amount of freedom (that she sometimes asks for) from her little sisters whilst having them close.
Their walk-in closet is home for all their clothes. I purchased the Ikea dresser and painted it to match the colors in their room. Instead of putting their dresser in their bedroom I decided to keep it in their closet to conserve space in the room. It fits perfectly!
Their room has easily become our favorite to hang out and seek refuge in. The girls call it their treehouse because in a lot of ways it feels like one. It’s a magical room for three little blonde haired girls to call their own. There is so much life and love lived in this room. I hope it becomes a safe haven for them to grow and fully be who they are. A place where they can share their secrets and stay up late talking until their eyelids become heavy. A place for fun, tears, and giggles too. A room where they start to write beautiful chapters of their sisterhood.
